Cycling along the Canal du Midi: from Trèbes to Homps 🚴‍♀️🌿

The Canal du Midi is one of the jewels of Southern France 🇫🇷. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site 🏛️, it attracts thousands of visitors every year who come to discover its locks, bridges, unique landscapes, and charming villages. And what better way to explore it than by bike 🚲?

At Easy Vélo Carcassonne, we offer bike rental with delivery service 📦. You can pick up your bikes directly in Trèbes, in Carcassonne, or at any point along the canal, for a simple and flexible experience.

Among our favorite routes, here is one of our most recommended bike rides from Trèbes 🌟 — perfect for a half-day or full-day trip with family 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦, as a couple ❤️, or with friends 🍷.

Trèbes: the perfect starting point 🚤

Just 5 minutes by car 🚗 from Carcassonne and its famous medieval citadel 🏰, Trèbes is a pretty town crossed both by the river Aude 🌊 and the Canal du Midi. Easily accessible via the motorway, Trèbes is a great place to start your ride:

  • ✅ easy parking,

  • ☕ cafés and terraces by the port,

  • ℹ️ tourist office,

  • 🌿 Domaine des Pères (olive oil & mill),

  • ⚙️ the famous triple lock,

  • 🌉 the Rodes bridge and Vauban aqueduct.

A safe and car-free start 🚫🚗 — ideal for families!

Towards Marseillette: shade and heritage 🌳

Heading east ➡️ towards Narbonne, the towpath quickly becomes peaceful ✨, shaded by plane trees. After a few kilometers, you reach Marseillette 💧 — a practical stop with drinking water, cafés, and charming accommodations 🏡.

The scenery then opens up 🤩:👉 Canal with panoramic views,👉 the drained lake of Marseillette and its unique farmland 🌾,👉 the Montagne Noire and Alaric hills in the distance ⛰️.

Puichéric: the “Venice of Minervois” 🛶

About 15 km further 🚴, you arrive at Puichéric, nicknamed the Venice of Minervois:

  • 🏰 its castle, once home to Pierre-Paul Riquet, creator of the canal,

  • 🍴 local restaurants and shops,

  • 🎭 the unique lock of Puichéric with its sculptures.

Nearby, the Lac de Jouarres 💦 offers swimming 🏊, restaurants 🍽️, and water sports — perfect for a relaxing break.

Return to Trèbes 🔄

You can return:

  • 🚲 the same way back,

  • 🛣️ via Minervois country roads,

  • 🌾 across the drained lake of Marseillette, with its ingenious irrigation system.
